Smart TV app not working? Safe fixes to try

Short answer

Most app problems on a smart TV clear when you switch the TV off at the wall for a minute, check the internet is working, and update the app and the TV's software. If one app still won't work, delete it and install it again. Menu names vary between TV brands, so look for similar wording on yours.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Restart the TV properly

Many TVs only go to standby with the remote. Switch the TV off at the wall socket (or unplug it), wait 60 seconds, then switch it back on.

  2. Check the internet

Open the TV's network settings and run its connection test. Check other devices are online too. If nothing in the house is connected, restart your router.

  3. Update the app

Most TVs update apps automatically, but you can check in the TV's app store or app settings.

  4. Update the TV's software

Look for Software update or System update in the TV's settings (often under Support, General or System).

  5. Clear the app's data, if your TV offers it

On TVs with Android TV or Google TV, open Settings > Apps, choose the app, then Clear cache. You may need to sign in again afterwards.

  6. Delete the app and install it again

Remove it from your apps list, then reinstall it from the TV's app store and sign in.

If this happens, try this

  • If the app says the service is unavailable

The problem may be at their end. Check the service's website or social media from your phone.

  • If the app works on your phone but not the TV

The TV may no longer be supported by that app. Check the service's list of supported devices.

  • If the picture keeps buffering

Move the router closer, or use a network cable if your TV has a socket for one.

  • If every app is slow

The TV may be short of storage. Delete apps you don't use.

Things to be careful about

  • A factory reset of the TV erases all your settings, apps and sign-ins. Only use it if the TV maker's support advises it.

  • Never give your streaming password to someone who contacts you about a "problem" with your account. Sign in to the service directly instead.
