Fake tech support warning: stay safe while fixing your own tech
Short answer
When you're searching for help with a computer problem, you're a target for fake tech support. Genuine companies don't put phone numbers in pop-ups or call you out of the blue about a problem with your computer. Never call a number in a pop-up, and never let a stranger onto your computer. If you already have, disconnect from the internet and act quickly.
How fake tech support works
A scary message appears,
Often full screen, saying your computer is infected or locked, sometimes with a loud alarm.
It gives a number to call,
Claiming to be Microsoft, Apple, your internet provider or another well-known name.
The "technician" asks to connect to your computer,
Then shows you fake problems.
They ask for payment,
Or for your bank details, to "fix" it.
Red flags
A pop-up you can't close
That says to call a number.
A warning with a countdown,
An alarm or flashing text.
An unexpected call
Saying your computer is sending out errors.
Requests to install remote access software,
Or to log in to online banking while they watch.
If a pop-up appears
Don't call the number
And don't click inside the pop-up.
Close the browser
On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select the browser and choose End task. On a Mac, press Option + Command + Esc and force quit the browser.
Open the browser again,
Without reopening the last tabs.
Run a security scan,
For example Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan on Windows.
If you've already let someone in
Disconnect from the internet
Straight away: turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable.
Call your bank
If you paid or shared any bank details. You can dial 159 to reach many UK banks.
Change your passwords
From a different device, starting with your email and banking.
Get the computer checked
For remote access software before you use it for banking again.
Report it
To Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 (Police Scotland on 101 in Scotland).
